As the burmese nonviolent struggle continues, with or without the capricious media’s attention, the United Nations has designated October 2nd – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s 138th Birthday – as International Day of Non-Violence
While the mainstream media’s attention is of utmost importance to create this kind of public opinion, it is nevertheless a shame and disgrace that no real effort is being made to connect the dots this very day. (At least here in Sweden) The International Day of Nonviolence is being observed in large part of the world today. It coincides with the nonviolent protests in Burma, as if not only Aung San Suu Kyi but Gandhi himself is trying to tell us something. Do we dare to listen? It is time to demand responsible and intelligent Peace Journalism, one that acknowledge nonviolence just as seriously as the ongoing bloody hunt for new victims and evildoers to exploit. “Journalism has become the art of creating expectations, instead of enlightment”, Gandhi commented in the late ’30s. It’s sadly even more relevant today. Jan Viklund,
